Do you think religion is necessary?

with all the hands the bible has been through, if god existed i would think he would understand one for not believing. however, what if you are a good person... your kind, you apologize to those you have done wrong too ( which is like asking for forgiveness), and just an overall good and giving person? would god send a genuine good person to hell for simply not believing a book that has been tossed through many hands over a long period of time??
